>> Welcome to [VetstoWashington.com]

It is well documented that we are losing our World War II veterans at the rate of 1200 to 1500 a day nationwide.  Here in the CSRA and Augusta, the newspaper carries the obituary for two to three veterans everyday.

It will not be long before the "Greatest Generation" will exist only in our memories and annual ceremonies held around the country.

It was not until 2004, almost 60 years after the end of WW II, that a fitting memorial was dedicated in the capitol.  This memorial is justly deserved and long overdue.  It was so long in coming that many of the surviving WW II veterans have very little time left to see it and the health of many veterans prohibits them from making the trip to Washington.

The "Vets to Washington" project is designed to insure that every WW II veteran, residing in the CSRA, capable of making the trip, is afforded the opportunity to go.

The project covers hotel, transportation to and from D.C., and a dinner for each veteran and spouse or companion.  A trip coordinator will accompany each trip to assist them.

A Project of this kind cannot be successful without community support and involvement.  A "Vets to Washington" account has been opened to accept contributions for sponsoring these trips.  [click here for more information]

>> Our Greatest Generation

Before you leave this page, let us take a moment to reflect on the true contribution made by our WW II veterans.  These veterans affected the world in a way greater than any other group in our history.

If you think about the history of the United States of America, we have fought in many wars.  All of the wars affected a few countries in one-way or another.  World War II, without the contribution of the United States, would have resulted in a world that was ruled by two powers, Germany and Japan, and the annihilation of the Jewish people forever.

The sacrifice of the "Greatest Generation" is what insured the lifestyle and freedom enjoyed today in many countries.  They destroyed two dictatorships, brought an end to war overseas, and came home and built a nation that insured out freedom to live as we do.

Somewhere on an island in the pacific, a site of a major battle and the unmarked graves of many Americans, these words are carved on a simple stone monument in memory of those who died there during WW II: "When you go home, go home to your families and say, to insure their tomorrow, we gave our today."

Your support of the "Vets to Washington" project will ensure these words and the contributions of the men and women they memorialize will never be forgotten.  Your generosity will ensure this project continues.
